Current positions

Dr Elena Zakharova is a head of Nephrology Department of Moscow City Clinical Hospital n.a. S.P. Botkin, associate Professor of Nephrology Department of Russian Medical Academy of Continuous Postgraduate Education, and of Nephrology Department of Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry.

Education and professional activity

She was born in Moscow, studied General Medicine in the Institute of Medicine and Dentistry, and graduated residency in nephrology in the Research Institute of Transplantology and Artificial Organs. Since 1987 she is working in Nephrology Department of Moscow City Clinical Hospital n. a. S.P. Botkin, first as a nephrologist, and since 1992 - as head of the Department. Dr Zakharova defended her PhD Thesis "Prognostic Factors of Outcomes in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Systemic Vasculitis with Kidney Involvement" in 2005, and became associate professor of Russian Medical Academy of Continuous Postgraduate Education Nephrology Department, and later - of Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry Nephrology Department, providing teaching course on general nephrology.

Activity in professional societies

She is currently Russian Dialysis Society president, and Scientific Society of Russian Nephrologists Executive Committee member. Since 2019 she has become a chair of ISN Regional Committee/Board for Russia & NIS, ISN Educational Ambassadors Program Committee deputy-chair; she is also ERA-EDTA Activation Committee for Central Europe member, ERA-EDTA YNP Advisory Board member. Previously a member of ISN SRC committee (2014-2016), ERA-EDTA CME Committee (2014-2015), KDIGO Executive Committee (2013-2015), and WKD Steering Committee (2013-2018). Dr. Zakharova is active member of American Society of Nephrology

Editor’s activity

Dr Zakharova is a deputy-editor of Russian Journal “Nephrology and Dialysis”, editor-in-chief of Urology and Nephrology Open Access Journal, and editorial board member of the Journal Nephrology Reviews, Nephrology@Point of Care Journal, and Journal of Onconephrology.

Her current research interests include diagnostics and treatment of glomerulonephritis, thrombotic microangiopathies, monoclonal gammopathies of renal significance, and pregnancyrelated kidney disorders; she leads numerous clinical studies, and authored and co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications
